Music Theory

What is music theory? Obviously, it involves music, but what does the “Theory” part involve?
A “Theory” is by definition, a proposed string of thoughts culminating in a conclusion? Music theory is looking at the thoughts seen in music. It is a study of music and how it is put together. Just like certain colours go together better, so do some aspects of music. You can learn from music already composed to see what works, and what doesn’t. Music theory develops the language that musicians understand, and it tells them how to put a piece of music together and play it.
Thoughts or music theory are added to sheet music in the form of notations. The music notations can be written as symbols. This helps the musician understand the music better. To understand what the symbols mean, you need to take music theory lessons. Then everyone can be singing from the same hymn sheet so to speak. Please excuse the pun.
Music Theory looks at all aspects of music, the pitch, timber, rhythm, and the structure of the music. It takes note of the harmonies, melodies, chords, and intervals in the music. When you see repeated patterns in music, that pattern can be named, and you can then refer to a certain part of the music. Scales such as major and minor scales are also highlighted in music theory. This can be understood by others so that composition and reading of music is made easier.
Having knowledge of music theory can help when producing music. It can help iron out any problems in getting the music to run smoothly. It can help when changing music scale to suit a singer’s voice for example. These notations on the music make it easier to communicate to other musicians that you are playing with, telling them the changes needed, and how the music is to be played together. Music theory is described as `grammar` for music. It shows the best way for the music to be played.
Does this all sound complicated? A huge task to overcome?
